Outreach Program Overview

Every summer the CSM Minority Engineering Program (MEP) hosts PREP and SUMMET for high school students across the United States. PREP is designed for students entering 9th and 10th grade while SUMMET is for students entering 11th and 12th grade. Both programs expose students to life on campus and require that each student take classes in subjects such as calculus, chemistry and physics as well as introductory engineering courses.

The goal of LAER's participation is to teach the students about rachiochemistry in the environment and potential career opportunities in the field of radiochemistry. LAER developed a hands-on approach to teach the students the basics of radiochemistry and its presence everywhere around us, introduce applications of radioactivity and nuclear power, and discuss the health and environmental aspects of radiation.
